K is for Kingfisher
.
.
The kingfisher’s feather pigments are actually brown… the colours of blue, red and green are really iridescence, caused between different wavelengths of light interfering with each other. This is why it never looks the same colour from moment to moment, and why its feathers shine.
Kingfishers are our brightest birds in the UK, and are found along rivers and by still or slow-moving water such as lakes and canals.
They fish by perching on stumps and branches and watching the water, before plunging into and emerging from it with a fish.
The most likely sighting of a kingfisher is a blue flash as it streaks past or away from you!

Hi rodrian, thank you very much for liking my post enough to reblog it – but can I ask you to take any that you have reblogged down please – I need to have control over these unpublished as yet poems – they will be taken down after the challenge because it will be hard to get a publisher otherwise. Thank you!

Yes! I have a ‘no pinning’ notice but it isn’t very clear, I know. I don’t want anything reblogged as then I lose control of it, and even if I take it down here, it would still be on your site, if you see what I mean! These are for a new collection! Thank you so much.

Beautiful poem. My favorite part is “feeding only on sleek silver and glare” . Love the photo, too. We have the Belted Kingfisher here in Missouri. He isn’t nearly as pretty.

Thank you, Carolyn! The photo is not my work though – and as I don’t speak the language spoken by the photographer I regret I don’t know their name. I had to photograph the pictograms!
